FERRUM, Va. - The Methodist women's basketball team had the lead with less than three minutes to play, but Ferrum came from behind to earn the 71-66 win on Sunday.
The Panthers jumped out to the early 7-0 lead over Methodist, but the Monarchs used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to take the 14-10 lead.
Emily Huneycutt scored a free throw with 6:22 left to play in the half to give Methodist their largest lead of the game at 28-16. Ferrum closed the half on a 6-0 run, but the Monarchs maintained a 35-33 lead at the break.
Methodist held the lead through most of the second half until the Panthers' Tesla Akers hit a 3-pointer to give Ferrum the 53-51 edge with 8:26 remaining. The score was tied on three different occasions in the final minutes including a 66-66 deadlock with two minutes on the clock. The Monarchs came up empty on their final three possessions as Ferrum finished with the 71-66 win.
Dawn Sanderson paced the Monarchs with 20 points and nine rebounds while Huneycutt added 11 points.
Kristen Keith had a double-double for Ferrum with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Methodist will be back on the road on Wednesday when they take on Peace at 7 p.m.
