Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Methodist women's soccer team battled with Christopher Newport University and tied the game in the 24th minute, but the Captains edged the Monarchs 3-1.
CNU took the early lead with the first goal of the game in the 16th minute after Sarah Pettet broke through down the left side and scored. Methodist's
Lisa Paschal entered the game in the 20th minute and tied the game less than five minutes later with a shot off the left post and in the goal.
The Captains had three shots early in the second half before taking advantage of a corner kick. Annemarie Weaver scored on a header off of the corner to take the lead in the 55th minute. Christopher Newport added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to extend their lead to 3-1. The Monarchs'
Brooke Corley had a shot go off the crossbar a few minutes later, but CNU held on for the 3-1 win.
Sara Altman made five saves for Methodist while Meghan Gumbs had one stop for the Captains.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to N.C. Wesleyan for a game at 2 p.m.
