DANVILLE, Va. - The Monarchs kicked off the day with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-18) win over Shenandoah before dropping a 1-3 (25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 19-25) loss to Averett.
Methodist and Shenandoah battled early of the first set with the Hornets up 11-10 before Methodist went on a 9-1 run to take control. The Monarchs led by as many as seven before ifnishing with the 25-20 win on a kill by
Brittany McCoy. Methodist never trailed in the second set, jumping out to the quick 9-3 lead and finishing with the 25-17 win. They picked up where they left off in the third set opening up with a 6-0 lead behind the serving of
Kalie Ludvigsen. The Monarchs had set point at 24-13 while Shenandoah tried to rally, but Methodist won 25-18.
Jalesty Washington led Methodist with 15 kills while
Stephanie Wood added seven.
Kayci Miller dished out 27 assists and Ludvigsen and
Rachel Evans had seven digs apiece.
The Monarchs opened up with an 8-2 lead in the first set against Averett. The Cougars came back and tied it up at 14. The set went back and forth, but Methodist edged Averett 25-23 on a kill by
Hayley Williams. Averett took over in the second set and took the 25-21 win to tie the match at one set each. Averett led 22-18 in the third set, but the Monarchs scored three straight points to trail by one. It went back and forth before Averett finished with the 25-22 win. The Monarchs were within two points through much of the fourth set, but the Cougars finished strong with the 25-19 win.
Wodd led the team with 14 kills while Washington added 12. Miller had 45 assists while Evans led the team with 21 digs.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they host N.C. Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
