Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Methodist women's basketball outscored The Apprentice School in the second half, but could not overcome a 10 halftime deficit falling 57-51 to the Builders on Sunday.
Apprentice (7-0) jumped out to the 17-7 lead in the first seven minutes of action before the Monarchs (4-3) came back with baskets from
Jordan Tyson and
Brianna Robinson to cut the lead to six. The Builders came back with quick baskets at the other end and maintained a 28-18 lead at halftime.
Apprentice led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but Methodist kept battling to make up the difference. With 5:30 remaining in the game,
Iesha Hayes grabbed a steal and fed
Jackie Lyles for a jumper to move the Monarchs within four points at 44-40. Methodist found themselves down by four again at 47-43, but could not get any closer as the Builders went 7-for-8 at the free throw line down the stretch.
The Monarchs produced nearly twice as many as shots in the second half and outscored Apprentice 33-29.
Emily Huneycutt led the team with 10 points while
Brianna Robinson,
T.T. Taylor,
Jackie Lyles and
Christina Schrader added seven points a piece. Robinson paced the team with 10 rebounds.
Denise Hamilton led Apprentice with 18 points while Courtney Collins added 13 points.
Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they wrap up the semester at Virginia Wesleyan College for a 6 p.m. contest.
