FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team opened the season with two dominating wins over Brooklyn College at 12-2 and 10-1.
Brooklyn scored the first run of the game in game one, but Methodist came back and rattled off four runs in the bottom of the first.
Jordan Adams,
Katie Scheller and
Katie Byrd led off the game with three consecutive hits and
Darci Martin kept the rally going reaching on an error.
Alex Bass capped off the inning with a two-RBI single up the middle to give Methodist the 4-1 lead.
The Monarchs added four more runs in the second thanks in part to a triple from
Katie Byrd. Byrd hit her second triple of the day in the third inning to score
Gabrielle Howard for the 9-0 advantage. Methodist tacked on three runs in the fourth before the Bulldogs added one run in the fifth, but the Monarchs finished with the 12-2 win.
Alex Bass pitched the complete game with nine strikeouts while hitting 3-for-3 from the plate. Adams and Howard went 2-for-2 while Byrd hit 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Marie Oneto took the loss for Brooklyn pitching four innings with one strikeout.
Sarah Chapman led off the second game for Methodist with a double ot left field.
Kimber Hall reached on an error to score Chapman and Hall ended up scoring after
Rachel Chapman drew a bases loaded walk.
Jody Eyler doubled in the third and scored on a RBI single from
Rachel Chapman to give Methodist the 3-0 lead.
Brooklyn got on the board in the fifth with an unearned run, but Methodist came right back with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to walk off in a run-rule scenario. Eyler singled,
Rachel Chapman doubled and
Katie Byrd finished off the rally with a two-RBI double to right center to secure the 10-1 win.
Rachel Chapman finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and Eyler went 2-for-3 in the win.
Methodist's
Brandi Weaver pitched the complete game giving up just one hit with four strikeouts. Tara Diesel took the loss scattering six hits with two strikeouts.
Methodist will be back in action on Sunday when they host Guilford at 2 p.m.
