Methodist Splits at Meredith Quad

Kayci Miller dished out 77 assists

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team won their fifth straight match Saturday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-22) win over Salem College. Emory & Henry broke the streak with a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 27-25).

The Monarchs opened up a 7-1 win in the first set and built up an eight point lead before Stephanie Wood finished the set with back-to-back service aces for the 25-15 win. Kayci Miller served the first nine points of the second set to essentially put it out of reach and help Methodist to a 25-9 win. Salem came back and battled in the third set capitalizing on Methodist errors, but the Monarchs prevailed 25-22 to win the match.

Jalesty Washington led the team with 11 kills while Lauren Bramble added 10 kills and Stephanie Wood finished with seven kills and four aces. Miller had 36 assists and eight digs.

Methodist won the first set over Emory & Henry after jumping out to an 11-5 lead with a kill from Brittany McCoy. The Wasps briefly led 16-15, but Washington picked up a kill and the Monarchs went on to win 25-22. Methodist scored the first three points of the second set, but it went back and forth with seven ties. The set was tied at 16 when the Wasps went on a 4-0 run and finished with the 25-23 win. Methodist hung around early in the third set, but Emory & Henry's Sam Lucado used three consecutive aces late in the set to help the Wasps to a 25-17 win. The fourth set was an all-out battle with neither team leading by more than by three points and that was at 3-0 and 20-17. Wood tied the set at 25 with a kill, but the Wasps responded with a kill of their own followed by a block to earn the 27-25 win and avoid the fifth set.

McCoy led the team with 13 kills while Washington added 12. Miller had 41 assists and nine digs while Rachel Evans added nine digs.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they open USA South Athletic Conference action at Greensboro at 7 p.m.
