FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist took the early lead and battled out a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 25-15) win over Meredith College on Wednesday night.
The Monarchs (8-2, 3-1) jumped out on top with two aces from
Stephanie Wood, but Meredith came back and tied the set at nine. Methodist started to pull away and used an 8-0 run late in the set to prevail 25-18. The Angels (9-5, 3-3) had the early 7-4 lead, but neither team led by more than three points at any point during the second set. Both teams exchanged points before Methodist had set point at 24-22. Meredith answered with four straight points to win 26-24.
Methodist came back firing in the third set and led 9-5 forcing the Angels to call a timeout. Meredith cut the lead to three on a number of occasions, but the Monarchs finished with the 25-20 win on a kill by
Lauren Bramble. It was all Monarchs in the fourth set as they took the 9-3 advantage with a block by Wood. Methodist kept battling and earned the match win with a 25-15 victory in the set.
Jalesty Washington paced the team with 17 kills and Bramble added 13 kills. Wood finished with 10 kills while
Hayley Williams had six blocks.
Kayci Miller dished out 38 assists and
Rachel Evans had a team-high 20 digs.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Friday when they host a USA South quad match. They will take on Christopher Newport at noon and Ferrum at 6 p.m.
