Monarchs Earn Split in Quad Match

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist dropped a 0-3 (13-25, 13-25, 17-25) match to No. 6 Chris. Newport on Friday before finishing with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-17) victory over Ferrum.

Methodist battled in the first set and trailed just 7-6 after a kill by Stephanie Wood. The Captains went on a 4-0 run to take control and the Monarchs could not make up ground. Christopher Newport won 25-13. CNU took the early lead in the second set and prevailed 25-13. In the third set, the Captains led by as many as 12 before the Monarchs worked their way back into it. Hayley Williams served three straight points including an ace, but Methodist lost 25-17.

Jalesty Washington led the team with eight kills while Brittany McCoy had seven and Stephanie Wood added six. Kayci MIller had 25 assists and 11 digs.

In the final match of the day, Methodist jumped out to a 5-1 lead behind the serving of Jalesty Washington. Stephanie Wood closed the set with four consecutive aces for the Monarchs to win 25-13. Methodist controlled most of the second set and Wood added three more aces late to help the Monarchs win 25-11. Ferrum led 5-0 in the third set, but the Monarchs started to chip away at the lead and Hayley Williams served nine points to help the Monarchs rally and take the lead. Methodist closed out the match with a 25-17 victory.

Brittany McCoy led the team with 10 kills while Lauren Bramble added eight. Wood finished with seven kills and seven aces. Kayci Miller had 19 assists while Kendra Krupp added 16.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday when they host Mary Baldwin at 1 p.m. and Peace at 5 p.m.
