ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team won their second straight five-set match on Tuesday night with a 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 26-24, 15-12) win over N.C. Wesleyan College.
The Monarchs (12-3, 7-2) took the early lead in the match by winning the first set.
Stephanie Wood's ace gave Methodist the 15-11 lead and MU had set point at 24-20 on a kill by
Jalesty Washington. The Bishops (9-6, 4-3) scored the next two points to extend the set, but
Lauren Bramble finished off the win with a kill from
Kayci Miller. The second set was back and forth early before N.C. Wesleyan took a 20-16 lead. The Monarchs came back and tied it up at 21 and 22, but the Bishops held on for the 25-23 win tying the match at one set apiece.
Methodist led 18-13 in the third set and had a chance to win the set at 24-21, but N.C. Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run to steal the set at 26-24. The Monarchs were in a must-win situation in the fourth set and both teams exchanged points early. N.C. Wesleyan had the upper hand at 19-16 and 22-19, but after a Methodist timeout, Washington had three straight kills to tie the set and force the Bishops to call a timeout. The set was tied at 23 and 24 before the Monarchs tied the match with a 26-24 set win.
N.C. Wesleyan looked to take control in the fifth set and jumped out to an 8-4 lead. Wood earned a kill and turned the tide as the Monarchs came back to tie it up at nine. Methodist used a 7-1 run to lead 11-9 after a kill by
Hayley Williams. The Monarchs fought to the finish and
Rachel Evans sealed the deal with a kill for the 15-12 win.
Washington led the team with 21 kills and added 13 digs.
Brittany McCoy finished with 15 kills while Wood and Bramble had 11 apiece. Evans paced the team with 21 digs and Miller dished out 61 assists to go along with 16 digs.
The Monarchs will be on the road again this weekend as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. for a quad match with Christopher Newport and Ferrum.
