Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's basketball team trailed early before making a late run, but Christopher Newport University held on for the 62-53 win.
After Methodist upset the Captains (15-3, 10-1) earlier this season, the Captains came out with a bone to pick rattling off a 10-2 lead. CNU led by as many as 16 points in the first half before the Monarchs closed the half on an 11-5 run to trail 34-24 at halftime.
Christopher Newport scored two quick baskets to start the second half before Methodist returned the favor with layups by
T.T. Taylor and
Courtney Woods. The Captains extended their lead to 15 points with 12:51 left in the game, but the Methodist defense stepped up and went on an 11-1 run over the next three and a half minutes to cut the lead to five. Taylor hit two free throws with 5:58 left on the clock to keep the Monarchs within five at 51-46, but Christopher Newport finished strong down the stretch to secure the 62-53 win. Methodist came up short down the stretch shooting just 3-for-10 in the final seven minutes.
Jackie Lyles led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds while Taylor added 10 points.
Iesha Hayes finished with eight points and Woods tacked on seven.
Tia Perry paced the Captains with 20 points and Jerlisa Bowser had 12.
Both Methodist and Christopher Newport coaching staffs supported the American Cancer Society's Suits and Senakers Awareness weekend. The national event is designed to raise awareness about Coaches vs. Cancer and the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.
Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Averett University at 5:30 p.m.
