Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Methodist women's basketball team fell, 66-39, to No. 13 Messiah in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
After the Monarchs'
T.T. Taylor drilled a three pointer to pull Methodist to within one point (12-11) at the 12:59 mark of the first half, the 13
th-ranked Falcons reeled off a 19-0 run over the next 7:03 to take a 31-11 lead. During the run, Messiah forced the Monarchs into 11 turnovers and held MU to 0-of-5 shooting from the field.
A pair of free throws by
Emily Huneycutt stopped the Messiah run and pulled the Monarchs to within 31-13 at the 5:18 mark and Messiah went into the break holding a 38-15 lead.
In the second half, the Monarchs pulled as close as 17 points (42-25) on a
Brianna Robinson layup with 16:35 to play before the Falcons extended their lead to 27 points (55-28) on a layup by Taylor Miller at the 10:22 mark. Messiah's lead never fell below 20 points as the Falcons cruised to the season-opening win.
The Monarchs limited the Falcons to 37.1 percent shooting (23-62), but made good on only 30.0 percent (15-50) of their own field goal attempts and turned the ball over 30 times.
Brianna Robinson led the Monarchs with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
T.T. Taylor added 10 points and
Emily Huneycutt chipped in eight.
Kira Maier paced the Falcons with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dori Gyori added 12 points and nine boards, Chelsea Danel chipped in 12 points as well and Nickey Hess contributed six points and five assists.
The Monarchs return to action tomorrow afternoon when they will take on Kean at 2:00 pm.
