Methodist Runs Past Mary Baldwin, 96-16, in Women's Basketball

Box Score STAUNTON, Va. -- The Methodist women's basketball team limited Mary Baldwin to six second-half points in defeating the Fighting Squirrels, 96-16, on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Monarchs, who won their fourth straight and moved to 4-2 on the season (1-0 USA South), outscored MBC (0-4, 0-1), 57-6, over the final 20 minutes of play and held the Fighting Squirrels scoreless for the game's final 7:46.
 
MU's Emily Huneycutt hit a jumper eight seconds into the contest for the game's first points, and the Monarchs never looked back. By the 14:50 mark, Methodist's lead had grown to 10 points (13-3) and just over five minutes later the advantage had grown to 20 points (25-5) with 9:35 left in the opening half. Methodist went into the break with a 29-point lead (39-10).
 
The second half featured more of the same as MBC made good on just 3-of-16 shot attempts (.188) and MU connected on 23-of-39 shots (.590) from the field. Methodist also out rebounded MBC, 47-31, and forced the Fighting Squirrels into 38 turnovers.
 
In all, 14 different players scored for the Monarchs, led by 14 points from Maria Jones, who was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Ayanna Pegues added 11 points and Emily Huneycutt chipped in 10. Miriya Bryant grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Cynthia Jones added eight boards. Brianna Robinson also came up with eight steals, one off the single-game record at Methodist.
 
Sheridan Lawrence, Jazmine Brooks, and Shamanda Washington each scored four points for MBC, who dressed only five players and had to play the last six minutes with just four as Washington fouled out. Lawrence also grabbed a game-high 11 boards.
 
The Monarchs are back in action tomorrow when they play at Averett at 2:00 pm.
