Monarchs Stage Big Comeback in Play 4Kay Game

Methodist honored breast cancer survivors during halftime

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist University women's basketball team hosted one of the largest events of the year in support of breast cancer awareness. The Monarchs raised money to donate to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund  and the Cape Fear Valley Friends of the Cancer Center all surrounding the women's basketball game against Meredith College.

Methodist trailed by 15 points in the first half before staging a huge rally through the second half to regain the lead at 72-71 with 1:49 remaining in the game. Meredith led 42-28 early in the second half but the Monarchs chipped away at it cutting the lead two on a jumper from Iesha Hayes with 13:23 remaining in the game. The Angels went back up by nine at 62-53, but Methodist responded with seven straight points to keep battling. The Monarchs kept driving to the basket and used free throws down the stretch to take over late. Jackie Lyles converted two free throws with 1:49 left and Meredith had turnovers on their next two possessions. The Monarchs picked up huge rebounds and went back to the free throw where T.T. Taylor secured the win with two free throws at 74-71.

The Monarchs opened the game strong with an 8-2 lead. Meredith came back and took their first lead of the game at 11-10 after five and a half minutes. The game was tied at 18 when the Angels rattled off 11 straight points. Methodist's Brianna Robinson broke the drought with a layup. Meredith took their largest lead of the game at 39-24 with 1:37 left in the half before leading 41-28 at halftime.

T.T. Taylor led Methodist with 22 points and nine rebounds while Courtney Woods added 17 points including eight from the free throw line. Hayes scored 16 points thanks in part to two 3-pointers.

Megan Rahn paced Meredith with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

The final figures are being tabulated on money raised during the event to be posted as soon as possible. Before the game, Methodist recognized senior Jordan Tyson in her final regular season home game. Tyson is a four-year letter winner for the Monarchs and has played in 92 games.


Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they host N.C. Wesleyan at 7 p.m. in the first round of the USA South Tournament.
