GREENSBORO, N.C. - Methodist battled back to earn the 5-4 win in game one, but their rally came up short in game two as Greensboro took the 1-0 victory.
Methodist scored first in game one when
Jordan Adams led off with a single.
Megan Lee sacrificed her to second and she moved to third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch. The Monarchs went ahead 2-0 in the second after
Katie Byrd led off with a double. Byrd moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Lindsay Tippett's groundout. The Pride scored a run a piece in the second, third and fourth innings to take the 3-2 advantage. Methodist tied the game in the fifth when
Erica Bradley led off with a double and scored on
Sarah Stapleton's single. Greensboro took advantage of a lead-off walk in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 4-3, but The Monarchs rallied with two runs in the sixth. Tippett sparked a rally with a single to left and
Raevin Harvey pinch ran.
Marcy McKee doubled to score Harvey and moved to third on a groundout. McKee scored the game-winning run on a single from Stapleton.
Adams, Bradley and Stapleton went 2-for-3 in the game and Stapleton had a team-high two RBI.
Jessica Farmer pitched five innings to earn the win with three strikeouts.
Kayla Malone finished in relief to record the save.
The Monarchs had a runner on in the first and second innings, but it was Greensboro who scored first in game two with a run on three hits in the third. Methodist got out of the inning with a double play and had runners on first and second in the top of the fourth with singles by McKee and Bradley, but the Pride recorded a double play of their own to hold the Monarchs scoreless.
Ally Griffin kept Methodist's hopes alive in the top of the seventh by reaching on an error.
Annie Zaremski entered to pinch run and moved to second on Tippett's single.
Jordan Adams drew the walk to load the bases, but Greensboro's Hannah Pennell picked up her third strikeout of the day to finish the shutout.
McKee and Stapleton were 2-for-3 and Tippett was 1-for-1. Malone pitched the complete game scattering nine hits with two strikeouts.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host Averett at 3 p.m. in conjunction with
Military Appreciation Day.
