FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team was three outs away from a doubleheader sweep over regional rival Virginia Wesleyan College when heavy rain made field conditions unplayable. It started to rain in the sixth inning of game one, but Methodist picked up an 11-6 win and went ahead 5-0 in four innings of game two before it became too much to finish.
The Monarchs (27-15) took the early lead in game one with three runs in the first inning.

Marcy McKee and
Alex Winters drove in the third run for the early 3-0 advantage. The Marlins (23-10) came right back in the top of the second with four runs on three hits. Methodist responded with six runs in the bottom of the second on five hits. Three of the six runs were scored on wild pitches to help the Monarchs to the 9-4 lead.
Methodist added two runs in the fifth with RBI from
Megan Lee and McKee to lead by seven. Virginia Wesleyan scored two in the sixth, but MU finished with the 11-4 win.
Krista Zentner went 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI.
Jordan Adams went 2-for-2 and Byrd, Winters and
Erica Bradley added two hits apiece.
Jessica Farmer pitched the complete game scattering eight hits with three strikeouts to earn the win.
After two and a half scoreless innings of game two, Methodist went ahead 2-0 in the third. Lee and
Lindsay Tippett had RBI to help the Monarchs. The team added three runs in the fourth capitalizing on two defensive errors and Tippett's RBI single to go ahead 5-0.
Methodist took the field in the top of the fifth looking for three outs, but with the rain picking up, the field was determined unplayable and the game was called with no makeup scheduled.
The Monarchs finish the season with 27 wins, the highest since 2008 and with no seniors on the roster, the future looks bright for Methodist softball.
