Methodist Volleyball Earns a Split on Day One of Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, Va. – The Methodist volleyball team opened the season splitting a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon on day one of the Cougar Classic. The Monarchs fell to Emory & Henry, 3-1, before blanking Roanoke, 3-0, later in the day.
 
The Monarchs fell to E&H, 3-1, in a tightly-contested match.  MU won the opening set, 25-14, but dropped the next three by scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23. Against Roanoke, MU
 
In the opening match, junior Risa Smith led the way for Methodist with 14 kills while adding 15 digs. Senior Stephanie Wood added 12 kills and hit .409 for the match to go with two blocks and a service ace. Senior Hayley Williams chipped in nine kills.
 
Junior Allison Graves and first-year Karly Klimas each posted a team-best 17 digs, and Graves added eight kills and six service aces. Junior Kendra Krupp ran the offense and racked up 36 assists.
 
Jamie Cockerham led the Wasps (2-0) with 14 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Nicole Tesh added 12 kills and Kelly Mae Kerlin paced the defense with 17digs. Maleah Neely registered 40 assists for E&H.
 
Against Roanoke, Methodist (1-1) earned a 3-0 win by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-18.
 
Wood led a balanced Monarch offense with 13 kills, while Williams added seven kills and Graves and Smith tallied six and five kills, respectively. Smith also posted a team-high 21 digs and Klimas contributed 14 digs while Krupp led the way with 33 assists.
 
The Monarchs return to the court on day two of the Cougar Classic on Sunday beginning at 10:00 am when they take on Guilford.
