Monarchs Drop a Pair of Heartbreakers at Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, Va. – The Methodist volleyball team dropped a pair of tightly-contested five-set matches on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Cougar Classic hosted by Averett.
 
Methodist (1-3) opened the day with a 3-2 loss at the hands of Guilford and then dropped a 3-2 match to Greensboro.
 
Against the Quakers, the Monarchs took a 2-0 lead after winning the first two sets, 25-15, 25-20. However, Guilford came back to win the final three sets, 25-19, 25-23 and 15-13 to eke out the win.
 
Junior Risa Smith led Methodist with 12 kills and added 10 digs. Senior Stephanie Wood added eight kills and seven service aces while senior Hayley Williams chipped in six kills and junior Allison Graves registered five.
 
Freshman Karly Klimas led the defense with 20 digs and Graves contributed 16. Junior Kendra Krupp paced the Monarchs with 32 assists.
 
Against Greensboro, the Monarchs dropped a back-and-forth affair with each team trading set wins. Greensboro prevailed 25-15,18-25, 25-21, 19-26, 15-8.
 
Wood led the offense with 13 kills and Smith also reached double digits with 10. Williams and Graves contributed nine and seven kills, respectively.
 
Defensively, Klimas led the way with 22 digs while Graves added 17 and sophomore Ryanne Greer contributed 14. Krupp once again led the team with 37 assists.
 
The Monarchs are off until Friday when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in the CUA Invitational hosted by Catholic University. Methodist begins play at 4:30 as it takes on Misericordia.
