Victoria Martins

Women's Soccer | 10/2/2013 8:55:00 PM

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The MU women's soccer team used two Victoria Martins goals to overcome an early deficit and emerge victorious, 2-1, over visiting N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing the Battling Bishops (3-6-0, 0-4-0 USA South) by a 1-0 margin after a Chelsea Laurens score, the Monarchs (4-5-1, 2-2-0) knotted things up, 1-1, in the 19th minute on an unassisted goal by Martins. Less than 10 minutes later, Martins took a pass from Taylor Cavazos and converted, giving MU a 2-1 advantage at the 27:42 mark. The team would carry that lead into halftime.

Taylor Ross (1-2-0) played the entire game in goal for Methodist, earning her first victory of 2013 as she made two saves. N.C. Wesleyan's Haley Hopkins (3-6-0) took the loss, stopping a single shot in her lone half of play. Vanessa Batchelor relieved Hopkins and made four saves in the second half.

Up next for the Monarchs will be an away game against William Peace on Saturday. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
