Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The No. 23 Captains of Christopher Newport raced out to a 21-point halftime lead and led wire-to-wire in defeating the Methodist women's basketball team, 78-35, on Sunday afternoon.
CNU, which entered the d3hoops.com Top 25 this week, moved to 21-2 on the season and 14-2 in conference play. The Monarchs slipped to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the USA South.
The Captains jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 15:27 mark of the opening half as Methodist misfired on each of its first six shots from the floor.
Emily Huneycutt finally got MU on the board with a layup at the 15:05 mark and several minutes later,
Cynthia Jones pulled the Monarchs to within four points (10-6) on a layup at the 14:01 mark.
The Monarchs' cold shooting as MU missed each of its 10 shots from the floor as CNU opened up a 19-7 lead with 6:27 to play following a layup by Brand Holland.
T.T. Taylor hit a three on the Monarchs' next possession to bring their deficit back to single digits (19-10), but Christopher Newport ended the half on a 14-2 scoring spurt to take a 33-12 lead into the break.
Christina Schrader opened the second period with a jumper for MU, bringing its deficit to 19 points (33-14), but CNU answered with another scoring burst, this on a 10-2 spurt, that pushed its lead back up to 27 points (43-16) with 16:07 left en route to the win.
In all, MU shot 21.2 percent from the floor (11-52) and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the line. CNU shot a robust 56.6 percent from the field (30-53) and was a perfect 14-for-14 at the free-throw line. The Captains also held a 45-24 edge in rebounding.
Brianna Robinson was the lone Monarch in double figures, scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Jones added six points and three rebounds and
Iesha Hayes had four steals.
Camry Green and Tia Perry led four Captains in double figures with 15 points apiece. Green also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Jordan Miller added 13 points off the bench and Nicole Mitchell chipped in 10 points.
The Monarchs are back on the court on Saturday when they host Ferrum at 2:00 pm in the team's annual Play 4kay game.
