Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's basketball team hit on each of its first seven shots from the floor and cruised to an 83-28 win over Mary Baldwin College on Saturday afternoon.
Emily Huneycutt began the barrage for the Monarchs (13-6, 8-4), following up an early layup with a three pointer just over a minute into the game for an early 5-0 lead.
Iesha Hayes and
Christina Schrader added layups and Huneycutt added another three as the MU lead grew to 12-0.
T.T. Taylor added a free throw,
Brianna Robinson made good on a layup and Schrader knocked down a jumper as MU took a 17-2 lead at the 15:03 mark.
The Fighting Squirrels (0-19, 0-12 USA South) briefly cut their deficit back to single digits at 21-12 following a layup by Sheridan Lawrence with 12:26 left in the half, but MU answered with a 15-2 run to close out the half and take a 36-14 lead into the break.
Any hopes of a Mary Baldwin rally were dashed in the second half as Methodist yielded just two points to the Fighting Squirrels over the period's first eight minutes and change and took a 56-16 lead on a pair of free throws with 12:43 to play.
For the game, the Monarchs shot 51.7 percent (31-60) from the floor, including an even 50.0 percent (8-16) from beyond the arc. Mary Baldwin shot 13.5 percent (7-52) from the field and turned the ball over 25 times. Methodist also held a commanding 49-27 edge in rebounding.
Huneycutt and
Miriya Bryant led the Monarchs with 13 points apiece, combining to shoot 11-of-14 from the floor. Robinson added nine points and
Kayla Pless chipped in eight as 14 different players scored for Methodist. Bryant also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
The Fighting Squirrels were paced by Shanice Miles' seven points and six steals. Meagan Barron added six points and Sheridan Lawrence chipped in five points and six boards.
The Monarchs are back on the court tomorrow afternoon when they host Averett at 2:00 pm.
