Chandler Christensen came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points and
Brianna Robinson had a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Methodist women's basketball team won its third straight, 82-64, over Averett University on Sunday afternoon at the Riddle Center.
Christensen knocked down 6-of-12 shots from the floor in 27 minutes off the bench and added three assists in sparking the Monarchs (14-6, 9-4 USA South) to the easy win. Averett fell to 5-15 (4-9 USAS) with the loss.
The Monarchs took control of the game with 14-5 run to start the second half that took them from a six-point lead at the half (40-34), to a 15-point advantage (54-39) by the 16:45 mark.
Christina Schrader began the second half with a pair of buckets wrapped around a layup by
Emily Huneycutt as MU quickly went up 10 points (46-36). Huneycutt then added a jumper and a three pointer followed by a
T.T. Taylor three-point play for the aforementioned 15-point lead as Methodist hit on 6-of-7 shots to begin the second half.
Methodist would eventually push its advantage out to as much as 20 points as the Cougars never managed to threaten in the second half.
In the first half, MU used a 13-3 run over a five minute stretch to turn a one-point advantage (26-25) into a 39-28 lead with 2:37 left in the half. Huneycutt and
Iesha Hayes each knocked down threes during the run and Averett turned the ball over four times. The Cougars righted the ship and used a brief 6-1 run to finish out the half to pull to within six points (40-34) by halftime.
The Monarchs shot 62.1 percent (18-29) from the field in the second half and finished a shade over 50.0 percent for the game (.508/32-63). Averett finished at 39.3 percent (24-61) shooting, including just 32.4 percent (11-34) in the second half. Methodist also held a 46-31 edge in rebounding and both teams turned the ball over 22 times.
Robinson's 20 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, were just one shy of her carer-best. She also added three assists and three steals. Huneycutt finished with 12 points and Taylor added 11 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals.
Mette Scheiman led the Cougars with 20 points and Shannon Smith chipped in 12 off the bench. Caroline Young contributed nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Monarchs are back in action on Wednesday when they play at Greensboro at 7:00 pm.
