Bishops Stave Off Monarchs, 80-69, in Women's Basketball

Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The N.C. Wesleyan women's basketball team outscored Methodist, 12-3, to close out the game and snap the Monarchs' four-game win streak, 80-69, on Saturday afternoon at Everett Gymnasium.
 
After the Monarchs' (15-7, 10-5 USA South) T.T. Taylor pulled Methodist to within two (68-66) with 3:37 to play, the Battling Bishops (10-12, 9-6 USA South) limited Methodist to 1-of-6 shooting to close out the game, while making good on 3-of-4 of their own shots from the field. NCWC also connected on 6-of-8 free-throw attempts, including 5-of-6 in the final minute of play, to pull out the 11-point win.
 
NCWC had taken a two-point lead into the locker room (33-31) before the Monarchs started the second period on a 10-3 run to assume a 41-36 lead on an Iesha Hayes bucket with 15:53 to play. The Battling Bishops answered right back, retaking the lead (44-41) on Monet Edwards' triple with 14:08 on the clock.
 
The see-saw second half continued as Chandler Christensen scored at the 11:21 mark to put MU back on top by three (47-44), before N.C. Wesleyan wrestled control back (56-51) with 7:42 to play on an Edwards layup. Methodist inched as close as two points on five different occasions, the last on Taylor's bucket with 3:37 to play, but could not pull ahead as the Battling Bishops held on for the win.
 
N.C. Wesleyan led by as many as 10 points in the first half (31-21), but the Monarchs closed the first half scoring 10 straight points, including a jumper by Christina Schrader with 21 seconds to play, to pull within two at the break. Four different Monarchs scored during the run, and NCWC missed each of its final 10 shots from the floor.
 
For the game, Methodist outshot the Battling Bishops 40.3 percent (27-67) to 37.1 percent (26-70), and outrebounded NCWC, 48-43. However, N.C. Wesleyan hit on 22-of-34 free-throw attempts, while MU only got to the line 22 times, connecting on 14 charity tosses. Additionally, NCWC turned the ball over just 11 times while forcing 20 MU turnovers.
 
Schrader led the Monarchs with a game-high 20 points and Brianna Robinson added 18 points and six rebounds. Christensen came off the bench to notch 10 points. Taylor finished with six rebounds and a team-high eight rebounds, while Hayes netted nine points and seven boards.  
 
Tiffany Bell and Derreon Cole led the Battling Bishops with 17 points apiece and Samantha Urquhart and Shanice Goree contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively. Urquhart added 10 rebounds and Edwards chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
 
The Monarchs return to the court tomorrow when they play at Christopher Newport at 2:00 pm.
