Monarch Softball Team Splits a Pair on Final Day of NFCA Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Methodist softball team wrapped up play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday afternoon, going 1-1 on the day. MU opened play with a 9-5 loss to Washington Univ. (Mo.) and followed that up with a 6-1 win over DePauw.
 
In the loss to the Bears, the Monarchs took and early 2-0 lead in the first inning scoring a pair of unearned runs after loading the bases with one out. Washington came back to assume a 4-2 lead in the third inning on a two-run double, followed immediately by a two-run single.
 
After the Bears went up 5-2 in the top of the fourth, MU pulled to within 5-4 in the bottom of the frame on RBI base hits by both Katie Byrd and Lindsay Tippett. After both teams plated a run in the fifth inning, Wash. U gained some breathing room with three more runs in the top of the seventh for the final 9-5 score.
 
Jessica Farmer took the loss for MU, allowing six runs (5 ER) on seven hits with one strikeout in 5.0 innings. Heather Williams led the Monarchs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Byrd and Tippett both finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
In the Monarchs' win over DePauw, Brittany Miller emerged with the win, while Jessica Phelps picked up the save with three innings of relief.
 
Tippett was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs driven in. Williams was 2-for-4 with a double and Krista Zentner was 1-for-3 with a run driven in.
 
Full statistics were not immediately available.
 
Methodist returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Ithaca in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
