Monarch Softball Team Sweeps Maryville; 6-1, 4-3

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Jordan Adams drove in three runs in a 6-1 win over Maryville, and Brittany Miller threw 7.0 strong innings as the Methodist softball team swept a doubleheader from the Scots on Sunday afternoon at the MC Softball Field.
 
In the opener, Jessica Farmer allowed just two hits over 7.0 innings and MU (12-10, 4-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit with six runs over the final two innings.
 
After the Scots took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, neither team managed to score four runs in the top of the sixth. Heather Williams reached on an error with one out and then stole second. Sarah Stapleton followed with a bunt single and Adams drove in a pair of runs with a double for a 2-1 lead. Lindsay Tippett's single moved Adams to third and Katie Byrd drove her in with a groundout to second. Ally Griffin then made it 4-2 with an RBI double that scored Tippett.
 
In the seventh, Adams added an RBI groundout and Byrd and RBI single as MU tacked on a pair of insurance runs.
 
Farmer picked up the win by allowing just one run. She did not allow a hit after the first inning and walked just one while striking out two.
 
Stapleton finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Brittany Miller was 1-for-3. Byrd was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
 
In game two, Miller picked up the win by allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
 
The Monarchs struck first, scratching across a run in the top of the first on Tippett's RBI double that scored Stapleton. The Scots came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Methodist then tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second as Marcy McKee, who had walked to lead off the inning, came in to score on an error.
 
MU tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to assume a 4-2 lead. In the fifth, Ally Griffin plated Jessica Phelps with an RBI single and in the sixth, Stapleton's run-scoring double gave the Monarchs a two-run lead.
 
Maryville attempted to rally to in the seventh, trimming its deficit to 4-3 on a two-out single before Jennie Burks was thrown out at third to end the game.
 
Tippett finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Stapleton added a 1-for-3 showing with an RBI, a steal and a run scored.
 
The Monarchs will now host Greensboro in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 4:00 pm.
