COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Methodist softball team posted a 1-1 record on the first day of the 28-team NFCA Leadoff Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Monarchs (7-5) began the day with a 3-1 win over St. John Fisher before closing with a 6-1 loss to Williamette.
Jessica Farmer picked up the win in the opener, limiting St. John Fisher to just an unearned run in 7.0 innings. She gave up three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
MU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when
Katie Byrd drove in
Heather Williams with an RBI single. After SJF tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth, the Monarchs added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as
Ally Griffin drove in a pair of runs with a base hit to break the 1-1 tie and help lift the Monarchs to the win.
In the second game, the Monarchs were victimized by four errors in the field and Williamette scored four runs in the fifth inning on just one hit.
The Monarchs, who fell behind 2-0 early, pulled within a run at 2-1 in the fourth inning as Byrd singled in
Sarah Stapleton before Williamette answered with four runs in the fifth inning.
Brittany Miller took the loss for Methodist, allowing six runs (4 ER) on seven hits and two walks in 7.0 innings.
Methodist is back in action on Saturday beginning at 10:00 am when it takes on St. Thomas (Minn.).
