MILLINGTON, Tn. – The Methodist University Baseball team was eliminated Friday afternoon from the NCAA South Regional at the hands of Millsaps College by a score of 8-2.
The loss brings the Monarchs season to an end with a final record of 25-22 that saw the team win the USA South Conference tournament championship.
The Majors (36-12) jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings off of Methodist starter
Daniel Royer to take a 4-0 lead. In the first inning, Kevin Wall hit a two-out double down the left field line to score Wes Perkins and Keith Shumak.
In the top of the second, William Chenoweth began the inning with a walk before advancing to third on an error by Methodist when Jerrod Myers put down a SAC bunt to put runners on the corners. Royer would hit Stephen Gate with a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch with Shumak batting would allow Chenoweth to score. Two batters later, another wild pitch plated Myers to give the Majors a commanding 4-0 lead.
Josh Ayers would come in to relieve Royer to start the third inning. Ayers ran into trouble in the fifth as Millsaps put two more runs as Perkins scored via a single by Wall, with Wall later scoring off of an Isaac Glenn base hit to give Millsaps a 6-0 lead.
With one out in the sixth and Gate on second, Perkins would send Gate home with a double to left to push the lead to 7-0. Ayers would yield way to
Michael Judge, but a Blake Little single through the middle allowed Perkins to score to make the score 8-0 in favor of the Majors. Judge and the Monarchs would get out of the inning on the next batter with a double play when Little was double-offed on a lineout by Wall to second baseman
Ronnie Hatfield.
Methodist would only muster four hits (two each by
Chris Power and
Stephen Nalls) through the first eight innings off of Millsaps starter Daniel Ross.
In the ninth inning, Methodist would rally to put two runs on the board against Ross. With one out in final frame,
Brandon Thigpen would double to right, bringing up
Tyler Younger. Younger would hit a homerun over the left field fence, scoring the only runs of the game for Methodist.
Alex Morgan, pinch-hitting for Nalls, followed Younger's homer with a single, but Ross would collect one more out before Zack Snider would come to the mound to get the game's final and decisive out.
Ross (6-0) was the victor, throwing 8.2 innings allowing two runs, both earned, on seven hits and no walks while striking out two.
Royer (4-5) would take the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks.
Ayers threw 3.1 innings of relief, surrendering four earned runs on six hits while fanning one.
