Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Emory & Henry capitalized on four Methodist turnovers in posting a 61-22 win over the Monarch football team on Saturday afternoon at Monarch stadium.
Three of the Wasps' (3-0) touchdowns followed giveaways by Methodist (2-1) and supplemented an efficient performance by E&H quarterback Kyle Boden, who completed 29-of-31 passes for 382 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.
Emory & Henry opened the scoring in the first quarter by taking the opening kickoff and marching 60 yards in six plays, capped by a Boden to Kyle Smith 14-yard touchdown pass. The Monarchs blocked the extra point, making it 6-0 with 12:44 to play. Following three-and-outs by both teams, E&H recovered a fumble by
Darius Page and scored four plays later when Boden found Kenton Williams from two yards out. Boden then punched in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
After the Wasps extended their lead to 22-0, the Monarchs got on the board when
Jordan Vann found
Vaughn Cross in the back of the end zone on third and goal to make it a 22-7 game with 12:10 left in the second quarter. E&H would score twice more before the break, including a one-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Turpin 37 seconds before intermission.
In the second half, the Monarchs struck first, scoring on Vann's one-yard plunge at the 12:17 mark of the third quarter that pulled Methodist to within 36-13 after an unsuccessful PAT try. However, Boden threw touchdown passes of 49 and 33 yards, and Kasey Jones added a 13-yard scoring run as E&H extended its lead to 55-15. After Jones' touchdown run,
Tyler Mitchell returned the blocked PAT, one of four blocked kicks for Methodist on the day, for an MU two-point conversion.
Vann would later add a seven-yard scoring run with 2:46 to play and E&H's Chris Edwards ripped off a 75-yard run on the first play of the Wasps' ensuing possession to cap the scoring.
For Methodist,
Max Reber completed 13-of-26 passes for 167 yards with three interceptions, and also rushed for a team-high 56 yards on 13 carries. Vann finished 3-for-3 for 11 yards through the air with one touchdown, and added 11 yards on three carries including the two touchdown runs.
Anthony Radke led the receiving corps, hauling in four passes for 71 yards.
Defensively the Monarchs were led by
Andrew Davis, who had 10 tackles.
Tyler Mitchell and
Jonathon Fulmore had eight tackles apiece, and Fulmore added 0.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
Antjuan Jones added seven tackles, including 2.0 for loss (-3 yards).
Mike Jones had two of the Monarchs' blocked kicks on the day.
Boden also added 24 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go with his strong passing game. Josh Smith posted game-highs in catches (12) and yards (153) while hauling in two of Boden's touchdown passes. Cleo Cooper added 95 yards on four catches, including a 49-yard touchdown catch. Chris Edwards had an even 100 yards rushing on just six carries with one touchdown.
Ryan Bird and Scott Hill had eight tackles each for Emory & Henry, and Byrd added an interception. Robbie Gaines added five tackles and a pick and Randall Conley chipped in five tackles with a sack.
Methodist is back in action on Saturday when it opens conference play at Maryville at 2:00 pm.
