Methodist Women’s Basketball Returns to Win Column, Defeats Meredith, 66-50

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - On the heels of a 32-point defeat at Maryville over the weekend, the Methodist women's basketball team returned to action on Wednesday night and won at Meredith, 66-50, at Weatherspoon Gym.
 
Holding a six-point advantage (28-22) at halftime, the Monarchs (8-2, 4-1 USA South) and the Avenging Angels (3-7, 1-3 USA South) exchanged baskets for the better part of seven minutes to begin the second period. Following two Laquetta Hairston free throws at the 13:25 mark, Meredith was within six points (40-34) of Methodist. However, 11 unanswered MU points broke open the game after Alexis Wallace hit a jumper at 10:05 to widen the Monarchs' lead to 17 points (51-34). MC would trail by no less than 12 points for the remainder of the game.
 
In the opening half, Meredith had an eight-point advantage (16-8) at the 11:28 mark, keyed by a 6-0 spurt where Brittaney Rice, Tyler Gresham and Nicole Miller each contributed two points apiece. Methodist would go on a 14-1 run to seize a five-point lead (22-17) following a three-point play by Jalisia Campbell with 2:58 remaining on the clock. Campbell and Wallace combined for eight of those 14 points over more than eight minutes. The Avenging Angels would go nearly nine minutes without a successful field goal before Keyanka Bailey made a layup at the 2:30 mark (22-19).
 
The Monarchs ended the evening having made 22-of-54 field-goal attempts (.407) while Meredith succeeded on just 14-of-52 shots from the floor (.269). Additionally Methodist held a 44-38 edge on the glass.
 
Jackie Lyles led MU with game-highs of 22 points and seven steals and also had seven rebounds. Wallace totaled career-highs of 18 points and 12 boards, and Campbell had 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
Bailey paced the Avenging Angels with 20 points and three steals. No other Meredith player finished in double figures.
 
Methodist will be back on the hardwood on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Piedmont for a 2:00 pm matchup.
