Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
Jackie Lyles became the sixth player in Methodist women's basketball program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, but the Monarchs came up short in overtime against Greensboro, 80-76, on Saturday afternoon at the Riddle Center.
With MU (9-4, 5-3 USA South) trailing by a 56-54 margin and 12 points already to her credit, Lyles grabbed a defensive rebound after a missed Greensboro three-point shot and was fouled as she ran down the court. The Pride (10-4, 6-2 USA South) had over 10 team fouls in the second half to put it in the double bonus so Lyles stepped to the foul line to attempt two free throws at the 6:46 mark with 999 career points to her credit. She hit her first foul shot to join the Anne Uleman, Stacy Williams, Triba Williams, Amy Todd and Daphne Akridge as the only 1,000-point scorers in the 36-year history of Methodist's women's basketball. Upon making this free throw, a brief timeout was called to acknowledge Lyles' accomplishment and head coach
DeeDee Jarman presented Lyles a commemorative basketball. Lyles proceeded to convert her second attempt from the charity stripe and tied the game up at 56-56.
In the subsequent two minutes following Lyles' achievement, the Monarchs went on 7-2 spurt, which included two consecutive jump shots by
Ayanna Pegues and ended with a three-pointer by
Monique Lofton with 4:51 remaining in regulation.
Now facing a five-point deficit (63-58), GC would turn the tables and eventually draw even at the 1:46 mark after an 8-3 run of its own. Greensboro closed out this stretch with six unanswered points, courtesy of a layup by Shanita Hampton, two free throws by Josylyn Spires and lastly a basket by Chevena Pickard that knotted things up with less than two minutes to play (66-66).
In the final minute, Syerra Troutman gave the Pride a two-point edge (68-66) with a layup with 36 seconds on the game clock. That advantage proved to be short-lived as Lyles made a jumper at the 0:23 mark to make things dead-even at 68-68. GC appeared to have an opportunity to seize the win when Stacy Hicks pump-faked at the top of the arc and briefly gained enough separation to let off a long-range shot with under 10 seconds remaining. But her shot rimmed out, and although Greensboro managed another jumper by Hampton with three seconds left, it could not convert the winning basket.
In the five-minute overtime period, Methodist claimed a three-point lead (74-71) after two
Wylonda Surles free throws at the 1:22 mark. But the Pride hunkered down and closed out the contest with a 9-2 run to secure the victory. Six straight points by Spires, one free throw by Hicks and a Hampton layup accounted for GC's scoring down the stretch. In this same span of roughly a minute and 15 seconds, Methodist turned the ball over three times and missed both of its field-goal attempts.
MU held a 79-52 advantage in rebounding, but struggled to overcome a season-high 40 turnovers. In comparison the Pride had just 19 turnovers to offset to a 32.2 percent shooting day (29-90).
Lyles had 16 points and a career-high 21 rebounds for Methodist and exited the game after picking up her fifth personal foul at the 2:29 mark in overtime.
Jalisia Campbell finished with career-best totals of 20 points and 12 boards, and
Alexis Wallace had nine points and eight rebounds off the bench. Pegues contributed three assists and 11 boards.
Pickard led the way for GC with 22 points, 11 rebounds and nine steals. Spires had 18 points, boards, five assists and five steals, and Hampton totaled 16 points, five rebounds and three steals. Troutman chipped in eight points, nine rebounds and four steals.
The Monarchs will finish their current three-game stretch at the Riddle Center when Salem comes to play on Monday for a 7:00 matchup.
