Salem Zips Past Monarchs, 81-57

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -Trailing by only four at intermission, the Methodist women's basketball team could not overcome Salem's relentless second-half offensive attack as it lost, 81-57, on Monday evening at the Riddle Center.
 
Following an Ayanna Pegues layup with 11:40 in the first half, Salem (15-3) would score 10 unanswered points to wipe away Methodist's lead and claim a seven-point edge (27-20) with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. MU (9-5) would endure a scoreless drought of roughly four minutes before Chandler Christensen hit a free throw at the 7:33 mark. The Spirits would not trail again during the remainder of the night.
 
In the second period, Methodist would come as close as six points (41-35) after an Alexis Wallace layup with 16:22 on the game clock, but struggled to make up any more ground on Salem.
 
Over the course of the next 10 minutes, the Spirits burst away from MU and scored 29 of the contest's next 41 points to assume a 23-point edge (70-47) with 5:30 remaining in the action. The Monarchs missed 13-of-18 shots from the floor in this time frame as well as 6-of-10 free-throw attempts. By the time the final buzzer sounded, Salem owned a 30-15 second-half rebounding edge.
 
Pegues paced Methodist with 12 points to go along with four rebounds. Jalisia Campbell had 11 points and six boards, and Christensen added nine points and five rebounds. Jackie Lyles contributed seven points, seven boards, five steals and three assists.
 
Satavia Taylor had 24 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and three assists for the Spirits. Jasmine Shabazz totaled 21 points and 10 boards, and Quantashea Lewis finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Methodist will play next on Wednesday in a road matchup against N.C. Wesleyan with the game set to begin at 5:30 pm.
