ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Junior Taylor Cavasos' goal seven minutes into the first overtime propelled the Methodist women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over N.C. Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon.
Deycasha Miller was the first to put Methodist on the board, netting an unassisted ball in the 31
st minute.
The Battling Bishops responded in the 52
nd minute, as Rebecca Staylor found the back of the net off of a Cissi Eduhult pass, bringing the score to a tie, 1-1. The tie would remain throughout the rest of regulation time, forcing the two teams into overtime.
Cavasos broke the 1-1 tie in the 97
th minute, taking a pass from
Sara Snotherly and beating the Bishops' Ashley Major to lift the Monarchs to 3-5-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in the USA South. N.C. Wesleyan fell to 5-4-1 overall, and 1-2-1 in the conference.
Cavasos' goal in overtime came at the end of what was an evenly played game. Methodist held a slight edge in shots, 10-7, for the game, while N.C. Wesleyan posted a 5-4 edge in shots on frame. MU goalkeeper
Taylor Ross (3-4) played all 97:41 in goal for the Monarchs and made four saves. Major (1-1), who came in for the Bishops in the 66
th minute for Vanessa Batchelor, will take the loss after making one save.
The Monarchs will return to action this Saturday when they host William Peace at 4:00 pm.
