Methodist Women's Soccer Ties Maryville, 3-3, in 2OT

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's soccer team recorded a 3-3 tie against the Maryville Scots on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.

The Scots (8-4-1; 6-0-1) kicked off the day's scoring with a strike by Erin Persinger in the fourth minute to put Maryville at an early 1-0 advantage. Soon after, Maryville increased its lead to 2-0 as Lizzy Simmons took a pass from Allyson Hale to put it past Methodist goalkeeper Taylor Ross in the fifth minute.

Methodist (4-5-2; 3-0-2) rallied in the 29th minute as Deycasha Miller found the back of the net after taking a pass from Kortney Maggard, putting the Scots ahead by only one goal, 2-1.

Maryville capped the first half scoring with a Gabby Billstrom strike in the 38th minute, giving the Scots a 3-1 lead.

The Monarchs started the second half scoring as Leslie Coates knocked a Taylor Cavasos shot past Maryville goalkeeper Rachel Taylor in the 55th minute, putting the Scots at only a 3-2 edge. A minute later, Methodist tied up the match at 3-3 as senior Rylie Osborn celebrated her senior day as she tallied her first goal of the 2014 campaign and the fifth goal of her career as a Monarch. Osborn's goal served as the final tally in regulation.

The Scots looked to regain the advantage in the 75th minute. Ross was caught off her line on a shot by Maryville's Janelle Calhoun, however MU's Eryka Underwood slid into the bottom left corner of the net to clear the ball off the endline and preserved the draw.

In the extra time, both teams recorded one shot but struggled to generate scoring chances.

Methodist held a slight edge in shots, tallying 15 to Maryville's seven, while the two teams both recorded seven shots on frame.

MU's Ross will move to 4-4-2 on the season, making four saves during the match, as MC's Taylor will move to 8-4-1 after making four saves.
Methodist will take on USA South foe Meredith College Wednesday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
