FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's soccer team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat visiting Averett, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.
Prior to the match, Methodist celebrated their five seniors,
Frank Barone,
Sean MacDonald,
Chris Ryan,
Nahom Hargwoin, and
Kris Govasmark. From the fall of 2011 to the present, this group has been a part of 46 victories and won the 2012 USA South Tournament, the team's first-ever conference tournament championship. That season the team also made the program's first NCAA Division III tournament appearance since 1995, and ended the regular season ranked 23rd nationally. In 2013, the Monarchs captured the regular season conference championship, and nearly repeated as conference tournament champions, advancing to the tournament final.
Averett (4-9-1; 2-4-1 USA South) tallied its lone goal at the 2:24 mark, when Nathan Brown got open near the six-yard box and put a shot past MU goalkeeper
Alex Rabone.
Methodist (10-2-1; 4-2-0 USA South) was able to even the score, 1-1, when Ryan was able to find the bottom right corner of the net at the 37:00 mark after a deflection off an AU defender, registering his fourth score of the season.
Ryan wasn't the only senior who was able to capitalize on their day of recognition, as Barone scored off a pass from
Eirik Nordseth at the 57:57 mark to make it a 2-1 game.
The Monarchs stretched their lead to 3-1 at the 73:23 mark when
Seth Harrison netted an unassisted goal from 30 yards out.
To cap the day's scoring,
AJ Lee took a through ball from
Alec Baulch and was able to break away and put the ball past Averett goalkeeper Martin Erenstedt, putting Methodist at a 4-1 advantage at the 87:30 mark.
The Monarchs held the offensive advantage, outshooting the Cougars 21-5, with nine on frame to their four.
Rabone played all the duration in goal for Methodist and made three saves, while Erenstedt played all 90:00 as well for Averett and came up with five saves.
Methodist is back on the pitch on Wednesday when it plays at LaGrange at 2:00 pm.
