Fifth-Seeded Maryville Knocks off No. 4 Methodist, 2-1, in Men's Soccer

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Maryville College built a 2-0 lead and held on to knock of the Methodist men's soccer team in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.

The fifth-seeded Scots scored in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Monarchs were called for a hand ball in the box resulting in a PK that Palmer deposited past MU's Alex Rabone. MC extended its lead to 2-0 just over six minutes into the second half as Seth Douthat followed up a terrific save by Rabone with the game-winning goal at the 51:05 mark.

Methodist halved its deficit in the 86th minute when Nahom Harwoin took advantage of a misplay by MC's Ben Munger and scored on an open net to make it 2-1. Hargwoin nearly tied the game with two minutes to play when his header went just wide of the mark, and Sean MacDonald's shot with under 30 seconds to play was saved by backup goalie Jon Taylor to seal Maryville's win.

Rabone made two saves for Methodist in taking the loss. Munger made three saves in just over 85 minutes of play, and Taylor added one save in limited action. The Monarchs held a decided, 17-6, advantage in shots, but put just five on frame.

With the loss, Methodist wraps up its season with a final record of 13-3-1.
