FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The third-seeded Methodist women's soccer team defeated the No. 6 seed, Covenant, 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.
Â
Methodist, now 11-5-2 on the season, needed just a lone goal to dispatch the Scots, who finish their season at 9-10-1.
Â
Despite holding a 7-3 edge in shots in the first half, the two teams went into the break level at 0-0 as Covenant's Lucy Johnson came up with six saves in the opening 45:00. However, MU needed fewer than four minutes in the second half to dent the scoreboard.
Â
In the 49th minute,
Kortney Maggard played a ball into the middle that
Taylor Cavazos was able to flick on to
Cassie Poindexter, who then beat Johnson to her right for a 1-0 lead and the game's only goal.
Â
The Scots nearly tied the game up in the final minutes with a flurry of offense. CC's best chance was a shot from Bethany Logan with under seven minutes to play that banged off the crossbar.
Â
Taylor Ross picked up the win in goal for MU, needing to make just one save on the day. Johnson took the loss and made nine saves.
Â
The Monarchs, who are now 11-0-2 in their last 13 matches, will take on seventh-seeded N.C. Wesleyan in the semifinal round on Friday at 7:30 pm at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Va.
