LEXINGTON, Va. -- Shenandoah outscored the Methodist women's basketball team 32-13 in the second half and rallied for a 48-39 win in the season opener for both teams at the W&L Women's Basketball Classic hosted by Washington and Lee University.

The Monarchs (0-1) shot just 21.7 percent (5-23) in the second half, while the Hornets (1-0) made 14-of-30 shot attempts (.467) over the final 20 minutes in erasing a 10-point deficit at halftime.

Shenandoah used a 21-8 run over the first 12:56 of the second half to turn a 26-16 deficit into a 35-34 lead on Haley Urban's layup with 7:04 to play. Methodist opened the second half converting 4-of-22 field goal attempts (.182) with six turnovers, while SU countered with 9-of-22 shooting (.409) in taking the one-point lead.

After coming back to tie the game at 37-37 with 3:15 to play on a
Sydney Bryan free throw, Methodist saw Shenandoah run off 10 consecutive points to assume a 47-37 lead on Kristyn Arcata's three pointer with just 42 seconds to play.

The second half was in stark contrast to the first half in which MU limited SU to 6-of-26 shooting (.231) with 10 turnovers in building a 10-point lead. Holding a 19-16 lead with 3:14 left in the opening stanza, MU outscored the Hornets 7-0 to close out the half and take a double-digit lead.
Ayanna Pegues started the run with a layup at the 2:59 mark, and
Jalisia Campbell split a pair of free throws at the 1:16 mark for a 21-16 lead. Pegues added a pair of free throws at the 1:05 mark, and
Alexis Wallace capped the first-half scoring with a layup 35 seconds before the break for the 26-16 lead.

Wallace led the Monarchs in scoring with nine points. She added six rebounds.
Jasmine Canady totaled eight points and three steals, and Campbell had four points with a team-best 11 boards and two blocks. Pegues had five points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.

For Shenandoah, Arcata had 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and five boards. Holly Chittendon had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Erin French had four points, six rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists.

The Monarchs will take on Washington and Lee on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
