Wallace Leads MU Women's Hoops Over William Peace, 64-49

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Methodist women's basketball team outscored William Peace by 14 points in the second half to post a 64-49 win over the Pacers at Hermann Athletic Center on Wednesday night.

Alexis Wallace had a double-double of 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Monarchs (2-10, 2-4 USA South) their largest win of the season. Jalisia Campbell added nine points and 11 boards as MU out rebounded William Peace (5-7, 2-4 USA South) by a wide 54-42 margin.

Wallace helped the Monarchs come out of the gate quickly as her layup at the 15:07 mark of the first half gave MU a 12-4 lead early in the contest. The Pacers countered with a 9-0 spurt to quickly take a one-point lead (13-12) on Ka'la Jordan's jumper just under five minutes later.

The two teams traded baskets back and forth until MU eventually wrestled away a five-point lead (27-22) on Sydney Bryan's layup with just over a minute until the halftime buzzer. However, the Pacers trimmed their deficit to a single point at the break (27-26) as Jordan and Brittany Boykin contributed made baskets in the final minute.

In the second half, Boykin opened the scoring with a pair of free throws to give WPU a short-lived 28-27 lead. Wylonda Surles answered with a shot from long range for the Monarchs for a 30-28 lead and after Wallace drilled a triple at the 13:10 mark, the Monarchs led 41-34 and would not be seriously threatened the remainder of the way.

The Monarchs used a stifling defense that limited the Pacers to 26.0 percent (19-73) shooting to pick up their second win of the season. Methodist shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-13) from three-point range.

Ayanna Pegues added seven points and 10 rebounds for the Monarchs. Jasmine Canady added nine points and four assists.

For William Peace, Jordan had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Boykin added 10 points and five steals. Derrica Jones chipped in nine points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
