DANVILLE, Va. -- The Methodist men's soccer team increased its winning streak to four games on Saturday afternoon, as
Eirik Nordseth tallied two goals to beat the host Averett Cougars, 2-1.
Â
After today's pair of goals, Nordseth has tallied 59 total career goals, just one shy of tying the Methodist record set by Michael Scobee in 1995. Nordseth has also recorded 132 points in his career as a Monarch, just seven points shy of tying yet another school record (139), also set by Scobee.
Â
Nordseth tallied his first goal for the Monarchs (7-4-3, 4-0-2 USAS) in the 21st minute, assisted by
Fredrik Aalberg, for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Averett (5-9-0, 4-3-0 USAS) evened up the match, 1-1, in the 37th minute as David Cuperman scored off a breakaway up the middle. Thirty seconds later, Nordseth broke through the middle and recorded his second goal of the match, putting the Green and Gold ahead, 2-1, and concluded the scoring for either team.
Â
The Monarchs outshot the Cougars by a 20-9 margin, and 5-3 in shots on frame.
Â
Alex Rabone made two saves for MU for the win, and Averett's John Matrisciano took the loss after making three saves. Both goalkeepers played all 90 minutes of the game.
Â
The Monarchs will return to home play on Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.
