Newman Tallies Hat Trick in MU Women's Soccer 9-0 Victory Over Mary Baldwin

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's soccer team relied on six first-half goals and a hat trick by Jasmine Newman to defeat visiting Mary Baldwin, 9-0, in Saturday afternoon's Homecoming match.

Saturday's win propels Methodist to an overall record of 8-6 and a conference record of 6-3, and Mary Baldwin falls to 3-11 on the season and 0-9 in league play.

In the fourth minute, Taylor Cavasos sent a deflected shot past the Fighting Squirrels' starting goalkeeper, Brittany Tenn, for a 1-0 Monarch lead. Amber Conrad made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute, unassisted, and in the 35th minute, Newman tallied her first goal of the day for a 3-0 advantage.

Rookie Amanda Hayes scored twice on the day, with her first goal coming in the 37th minute off a feed from Cassie Poindexter. Three minutes later, Newman scored back-to-back goals, one assisted by Emily Borrel, to give the Green and Gold a 6-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Angelica Santos made it 7-0 scoring, unassisted, from inside the box in the 63rd minute. Conrad and Hayes scored their second goals of the match in the 66th and 70th minute, respectively, to push the Monarchs ahead, 9-0, and complete the days scoring.

Due to injury, Mary Baldwin was forced to play man-down the whole match, and time was cut to 70 minutes total.

The Monarchs outshot MBC 25-1, and put up 16 shots on frame, while the Fighting Squirrels recorded zero.

Meghan O'Meara (1-0) recorded her first collegiate win, playing the first 45 minutes. After the break, Catie Caughan took the field for the first time, playing the last 25 minutes in goal for Methodist. Neither goalkeeper was forced to make any saves.

The Monarchs will play at home again next Saturday as it hosts LaGrange College at 1:00 pm.
