Methodist Football Falls at Huntingdon, 42-6

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Methodist football team dropped a 42-6 decision at Huntingdon College Saturday afternoon inside Samford Stadium.

The Monarchs were outgained 400-265 and turned the ball over three times, including an interception that was returned 100 yards for a touchdown in falling to 3-4 (1-3 USA South). The Hawks improved to 6-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.

Huntingdon struck first, taking a 7-0 lead on a Luke Bailey-to-Nick Haas connection that covered 11 yards on HC's first possession of the day.

The Monarchs got the ball back and ground out a nearly nine-minute drive, using 15 plays to advance the ball inside the Huntingdon 10-yard line. On third-and-goal from the six, Dylan DeGroot was picked off by Anthony White in the end zone, and he raced 100 yards the other way for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 2:33 left in the opening period.

Methodist got on the board at the 11:09 mark of the second quarter as Brandon Torres capped another long drive, this one a 13-play effort, with a 26-yard field goal to make it 14-3.

The Hawks added a pair of scores in the period, an 11-yard by Bailey and a five-yard reception by Haas, to take a 28-3 lead at halftime. Huntingdon's lead grew to 42-3 with two more scores in the third period, including Vic Jerald's 52-yard run.

Methodist capped the day's scoring as Torres connected on his second field goal of the day, a 52-yarder, with under three minutes to play in the contest. The 52-yard field is the longest in Methodist history, surpassing Patrick Larkin's 49-yard field goal against Emory & Henry in 2004.

Emontie Dears led MU with 54 yards rushing on 18 carries. DeGroot finished 20-of-34 passing for 156 yards with a pair of interceptions and he was sacked twice. Damarco Smith had six receptions for 39 yards.

Bryan Bing led the defense with five tackles, including one for loss. Myles Merrick added five stops with a pass breakup.

For Huntingdon, Bailey was 10-of-17 passing for 140 yards with three touchdowns. John Iwaniec gained 93 yards rushing on just seven carries, and Jerald added 81 yards on eight carries with a touchdown. Haas finished with 67 yards receiving on five grabs with two scores.

Lake Romine and Jake Green each had eight tackles, and Octavis Harris and Anthony Wood each had seven. White had both interceptions of DeGroot and added three tackles.

Methodist returns home next week to host Ferrum at 1:00 pm.
