MU Women's Hoops Open Season With 61-48 Win Over St. Andrews

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Jalisia Campbell had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds and Sydney Bryan scored a game-high 15 points as the Methodist women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with a 61-48 win over St. Andrews on Friday night at the Riddle Center.
 
The Monarchs (1-0) outrebounded the Knights (2-2), 56-44, as both teams struggled shooting the ball, and MU got to the free throw line 33 times compared to just 18 for SAU.
 
After a tightly-contested first quarter that saw MU take an 18-15 lead, the Monarchs ramped up their defense in the second period, limiting SAU to just six points in taking a 33-21 lead at the break. The Knights shot just 2-of-14 in the second quarter as the Monarchs took control of the game. Campbell and Bryan each scored six points in the period.
 
The third quarter was more of the same as MU outscored SAU 16-9 in extending its lead to 49-30 in cruising to the win.
 
As a team, Methodist shot 37.3 percent from the floor (22-59) and did not attempt a three pointer. MU was also 17-of-33 (.515) from the line. St. Andrews shot 23.5 percent from the floor (16-68) and hit on just 4-of-24 three-point attempts (.167).
 
In addition to Bryan and Campbell, Ayanna Pegues had 11 points and nine boards with two steals and two blocks. Allison Dones chipped in six assists, and Jasmine Canady had five points and five boards.
 
For St. Andrews, Alexus Davis notched a double-double of her own with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Alexis Reed had nine points, and Cassidy Chipman totaled seven points and seven rebounds.
 
The Monarchs return the court on Sunday at Salem beginning at 2:00 pm.
