SALISBURY, Md. — Jalisia Campbell had a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds but the Methodist women's basketball team fell in overtime, 71-68, to Salisbury at Maggs PAC on Friday evening.
Neither team led by more than six points in a game that featured 18 lead changes and 11 ties as MU suffered its first defeat of the season to slip to 2-1. Salisbury improved to 2-0 on the young season.
The Monarchs took a three-point lead into the break, 35-32, before the Sea Gulls opened the third quarter on a 14-5 run to assume a 46-40 lead on Dee Terry's layup at the 5:36 mark. However, the Monarchs immediately answered with a 7-0 spurt of their own, including six points from Campbell to regain a 47-46 lead with 45 seconds remaining in the period.
Paige Bryce gave Salisbury back the lead with a layup at the 18-second mark, and Salisbury entered the final period up 48-47. SU briefly extended its lead to as many as three points in the fourth before Jasmine Canady and Ayanna Pegues recorded back-to-back buckets to push MU in front, 61-60, with 2:44 on the clock.
Both teams traded scores down the stretch and Lauren Rothfield's layup with 41 seconds to play tied the game at 65-65. MU turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, only to see Salisbury do the same, and Alexis Wallaces' potential game-winning jumper as time expired was off the mark as the Monarchs were forced to go to overtime.
In the extra session, Campbell gave MU a 67-65 lead with a layup, but Mary McDonagh answered for Salisbury with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 67-67 with 2:45 to play. Rothfield added four more free throws sandwiched around one charity toss from Pegues that put the score at 71-68 in favor of the home team with 15 seconds to play. Wallace missed a potential game-tying three as time expired.
Salisbury out shot Methodist, 44.8 percent (25-58) to 41.3 percent (26-63) and the Sea Gulls made good on 16-of-17 free throws (.941) while Methodist shot just 44.0 percent (11-25) from the line. Salisbury also had a 40-33 edge in rebounds to offset MU forcing 35 turnovers.
In addition to Campbell, four other Monarchs reached double figures in scoring. Wallace scored 14 points, Pegues had 13, and Canady finished with 11 points. Pegues and Alexia Hines had five and four steals, respectively.
For Salisbury, Rothfield finished with 19 points and 10 boards. Julia McLaughlin added 18 points, and Josephine Noonan added 10 points and seven rebounds. Terry had six steals, and McDonagh had four steals and eight rebounds.
Methodist is back in action on Saturday against the loser of Marywood and Apprentice.
