ATLANTA, Ga. --
Alexia Hines scored a career-best 13 points as the Methodist women's basketball team dropped a 58-44 decision at Emory University on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Hines shot 5-of-11 from the floor to go with six steals and a pair of assists, and she helped key a third-quarter run that saw MU (3-2) trim a 17-point deficit to just a five-point hole late in the third.
Â
Emory (4-1) stretched a 32-22 lead at halftime to a 17-point edge (43-26) on Khadijah Sayyid's three pointer at the 5:50 mark of the third quarter prompting the Monarchs to call timeout. Out of the timeout, Methodist outscored the Eagles, 13-1, over a nearly five and half minute stretch to pull within five points (44-39) on
Alexis Wallace's free throw with 19 seconds on the clock.
Â
Methodist was unable to complete the comeback however as Dumbei Egbuna hit a free throw to close out the quarter and Shellie Kaniut drilled a three to open the fourth quarter that restored a nine-point lead (48-39) for Emory. The Eagles would go on to outscore the Monarchs 13-5 in the final stanza.
Â
Sydney Bryan was the only other Monarch to score in double figures, chipping in 10 points off the bench on 4-of-4 shooting.
Ayanna Pegues scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, while
Jalisia Campbell pulled down a team-best nine boards.
Â
Fran Sweeney led the Eagles with 11 points. Sayyid scored nine, and Egbuna had eight as 10 different Emory players scored at least two points. Egbuna also had 10 rebounds, and Ilene Tsao had five assists and three steals.
Â
The Monarchs next play on Wednesday when they host Meredith at 7:30 pm.
