Methodist Women's Basketball Defeats Meredith, 70-56

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For the second time this season, Jalisia Campbell and Alexis Wallace each recorded a double-double as the Methodist women's basketball team defeated Meredith, 70-56, on Wednesday night at the March F. Riddle Center.
 
Campbell totaled a game-high 17 points to go with 14 rebounds and Wallace had 15 points and 15 boards as the Monarchs improved to 4-2 on the season. Meredith fell to 1-4 with the loss.
 
The Monarchs used a 12-5 run to start the third period and turn a four-point edge at intermission (30-26) into an 11-point lead (42-31) with 5:42 left in the quarter. Campbell started the burst with a layup 23 seconds into the period and Allison Dones followed with a jumper. Campbell split a pair of free throws and Wallace knocked down a jump shot to give MU a 37-29 lead. Alexia Hines' then made a layup and Jasmine Canady knocked down a trey to cap the run.
 
The Avenging Angels briefly trimmed their deficit to nine points late in the third, but another surge to begin the fourth quarter gave the Monarchs a lead as large as 22 points (67-45) in fourth as MU coasted to the victory.
 
Methodist's defense was stout throughout, limiting Meredith to just 28.1 percent shooting (16-57) and out rebounding MC by 53-31 margin, including 18-9 on the offensive glass. Methodist shot 45.2 percent from the floor (28-62) and totaled 20 assists while forcing 24 Meredith turnovers.
 
In addition to her double-double, Wallace added four assists and three steals. Campbell also had four assists, and Canady chipped in 12 points. Hines had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Ayanna Pegues scored nine points off the bench.
 
Meredith was led by Gabi Jessup and Kim Hinton, who scored 11 points apiece. Hinton also had a team-high seven rebounds, and Laquetta Hairston contributed four assists and three steals.
 
Methodist is off until Dec. 11 when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 6:00 pm tip.
