GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Methodist men's soccer team captured the 2015 USA South Conference Tournament Championship title on Saturday afternoon, defeating the No. 1 seed, Greensboro, 2-1.
Winning their first title since 2012, the Monarchs improved their win streak to 11 games and overall record to 14-4-3. Greensboro concluded its 2015 season with a 14-5-1 overall record.
After a scoreless first half, the Monarchs capitalized on a free kick by Eirik Nordseth, gaining a 1-0 lead at the 50:24 mark. With the tally, Nordseth pushed his career points total to 138, just one point shy of tying Methodist University's all-time record (139).
Methodist tacked on an insurance goal at the 76:03 mark as Gustav Fink-Jensen scored, unassisted, from 20 yards out for a 2-0 advantage.
Greensboro's Craig Gage cut the deficit to one at the 84:22 mark, taking a feed from the USA South's Player of the Year, Shaun Watt, and converting, but the Pride were unable to rally for a tying goal.
On the day, Methodist's offense proved to be the stronger unit, outshooting GC 11-3, including six shots on frame to the Pride's one. Alex Rabone, a First Team All-USA South and all-tournament selection, was awarded the win after not being forced to make a save in 90:00 in goal. Jaime Payamps was saddled with the loss, making four saves and allowing two goals.
Joining Rabone on the all-tournament team were Nordseth, who was named the tournament's MVP, midfielders Haakan Wahlstrom and Fink-Jensen and defender Ben Gold.
With the victory, the Monarchs claim the USA South's automatic bid into the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. Methodist will await word on a first-round NCAA opponent and location.
