FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Justin and
Matt Layden scored five points apiece and
Andrew Chinigo came up with a big save in the game's final minutes as the Methodist men's lacrosse team knocked off Southern Virginia, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.

Matt Layden had four goals and an assist, and his brother chipped in three goals and two helpers as the Monarchs (1-1) picked up their first win of the season. Southern Virginia slipped to 0-3 on the year with the loss.

Tied 6-6 at halftime, the Monarchs scored three times in the first six minutes of the third quarter to assume a 9-6 lead with 9:18 left in the period.
Justin Layden started the scoring 50 seconds into the stanza when he scored a man-up goal off a feed from his brother Matt. At the 10:24 mark,
Justin Layden scored once again with a man advantage, with
Trevor Dickinson picking up an assist for an 8-6 lead. Just over a minute later,
Chris Lombardi found
Ben Click open for a goal and MU pushed its lead to 9-6.

The Knights, however, came storming back and used a 4-0 run to take a 10-9 lead by the 6:35 mark of the period. Casey Rich started with an unassisted goal at the 8:52 mark, and he then found Anthony Good for a goal with a man advantage 26 seconds later to make it 9-8 in favor of MU. Good then fed Sean Petersen for a goal at 7:23 to tie the contest at 9-9, and Rich scored unassisted once more to give SVU a 10-9 lead.

Jake Smerka took a pass from
Andrew Ruskey with 39 seconds left in the quarter to tie the score at 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs opened the final quarter on a 3-0 scoring run to assume a 13-10 lead with 7:53 left in the contest. Justin and
Matt Layden each tallied unassisted goals, and Ruskey capped the burst with a man up goal off a feed from Dickinson.

Good made it 13-11 with 3:59 to play and give the Knights a chance. Petersen scored 23 seconds later following a pass from Good and the Knights trailed by just a goal with 3:36 on the clock.

Southern Virginia had one final chance as Methodist was assessed a holding penalty with 1:53 left in the game. With just over 30 seconds remaining on SVU's man advantage, Chinigo turned away a shot by Petersen and
Sean Mayefskie picked up the ground ball for the Monarchs. A successful clear attempt allowed the Monarchs to run out the clock and hold on for the win.

For the game, MU out shot SVU, 44-27, picked up 44 ground balls to SVU's 33, committed 11 fewer turnovers (31-20) and won 16-of-28 faceoffs. Methodist also converted on 4-of-9 man-up opportunities, while SVU was 3-of-6 with a man advantage.

Chinigo played all 60 minutes and made seven saves in picking up his first collegiate win. Derek Lamb played 58:51 in goal and made 12 saves, but just one in the fourth quarter.

In addition to the Layden's offensive production, Ruskey finished with two goals and an assist, and Dickinson and Lombardi each had two assists.
Trent Diaz was 16-of-25 in the faceoff X and scooped up an MU single-game record nine ground balls. Mayefskie and
Justin Layden each had five ground balls, and
Jacob Fitch forced four turnovers.

For Southern Virginia, Rich had eight points on two goals and six assists. Petersen finished with four goals, and Good had three goals and two assists. Russell Anderson led the way with six ground balls, and Ryan Larsen had five ground balls while winning 10-of-18 faceoffs.

The Monarchs are back at home on Wednesday when they host Alma at 2:00 pm.
