LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph College outscored the Methodist men's lacrosse team 5-1 in the third quarter and captured a 17-7 victory over the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at WildCat stadium.

The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Monarchs and leaves MU at 7-3 on the season. Randolph improves to 4-2 with the win.

Methodist was within striking distance as the second half began, trailing 7-4 as the third quarter began. The WildCats, however, opened the third period with three straight tallies to take a 10-4 lead on Graham Southwick's goal with 8:28 left in the quarter.

Jaylen Robinson scored unassisted to halt the Randolph run and make it 10-5 at the 6:39 mark, but two more WildCat goals to close the period left the Green and Gold in a 12-5 holed entering the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs opened the game taking a 1-0 lead on
Justin Layden's goal off a feed from his brother Matt. Randolph responded with a pair of goals before
Matt Layden found the back of the cage following a pass from
Jake Smerka to make it 2-2. Randolph inched ahead 3-2 before the Monarchs tied the game at 3-3 on a

Randolph closed the first half with a 4-1 scoring burst to take its' three-goal advantage into the break.

Methodist and Randolph nearly matched each other in shots (28-31), turnovers (23-22), ground balls (39-34) and face offs (13-14), but Randolph goalkeepers came up with 13 saves to just seven for the Monarchs.

Cam Lewis started for the WildCats and played the first 50:10 in picking up the win. He allowed five goals and made 11 saves. Matt Lindenbaum played the final 9:50 and made two saves with two goals allowed.
Liam Von Hoene started for MU and took the loss. He allowed seven goals and made three saves.
Andrew Chinigo played the second half and allowed 10 goals with four saves.

Matt Layden led the MU offense with a pair of goals and one assist.
Justin Layden had one goal and two assists, and Dickinson had one goal and one assist.
Kyle Peacock led the Monarchs with four ground balls and added three caused turnovers.
Daniel Richards had three caused turnovers with three ground balls, and
Dakota Chapman won 6-of-10 face offs.

Shane Soghomonian led Randolph with five goals, and Southwick had four goals. Campbell finished with a goal and five assists. Spencer Matthews had 11 ground balls and five ground balls, and Baden James had nine ground balls and five caused turnovers.

The Monarchs are back on the field next Saturday at Piedmont beginning at 7:00 pm.
