Penn State Altoona Sweeps MU In Softball Doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Penn State Altoona swept an afternoon header from the Methodist softball team on Sunday afternoon at Price Field. The Lions won game one 7-2, and captured game two, 7-3.
 
In the opener, the Lions' Raychel DeArmitt held MU to two runs (1 ER) on nine hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout in 7.0 innings to pick up her first win of the season (1-0).
 
Penn State struck for three runs in the top of the first inning as Kelly Chambers started things with an RBI double. Chambers would later score on an MU error in the outfield for a 2-0 lead, and Summer Feathers made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to score Clarissa Keller.
 
The Monarchs (3-5) got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Ally Griffin brought Sarah Stapleton home with a fielder's choice to make it 3-1. The Monarchs pulled within a run at 3-2 in the third inning when Alanna Anderson singled to left to bring in Lindsay Tippett, but Penn State Altoona scored two more runs in the fourth, including an RBI double by Lily Glunt for a 5-2 lead.
 
The Lions would tack on a pair of runs in the seventh to keep the Monarchs at bay. Monica Revels (1-1) took the loss in the circle. She allowed, five runs (2 ER) on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Jordan Pietrolaj pitched the final two innings and allowed a pair of unearned runs on four hits and a walk.
 
Cayley Oldham was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Green and Gold, and Stapleton and Griffin both finished 2-for-4. Stapleton scored once and Griffin had an RBI.
 
DeArmitt supplemented a strong pitching performance by going 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Keller was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, and Chambers had two hits in four at-bats with an RBI and a run.
 
In the nightcap, the Lions led 2-1 entering the fourth inning before piling on four runs in the frame to a 6-1 lead. Kate Burge started the scoring in the fourth with an RBI double, and Alamaria Miller added an RBI single. Chambers capped the scoring with a two-run double to left center to help PSA take control of the contest.
 
The Monarchs answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Stapleton scored on a passed ball, and Tippett scored on Oldham's bases-loaded ground out.
 
Emily Hester was tagged with the loss for MU. She allowed six runs (3 ER) on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Pietrolaj pitched the final 3.1 innings and surrendered one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
 
Burge picked up the win. She allowed three runs (1 ER) on nine hits and two walks with three striekouts in a full 7.0 innings.
 
Tippett was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, Kesley Harrington was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Stapleton added two hits in three at-bats with sacrifice bunt.
 
Chambers was 3-for-4 at the plate, and she drove in two with a pair of runs scored. Ashley Struble was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in, and Miller finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
Methodist is back in action on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach when MU takes on Iowa Wesleyan and McMurry.
