Methodist Women's Soccer Shuts Out Chowan, 5-0, in Season Opener

MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- The Methodist women's soccer team opened up its 2015 season with a 5-0 rout over host Chowan University on Tuesday night.
 
The Monarchs (1-0) dominated the offense from the beginning, keeping the host Hawks (0-1) pinned to their own half most of the match. Overall, MU tallied an overwhelming 48 shots to CU's three, including 21 on frame to the Hawks' two.
 
Jasmine Newman, assisted by Kortney Maggard, tallied the lone goal of the first half at the 18:48 mark when she scored from the top of the box.
 
Three minutes into the second half, Capri Clark notched her first collegiate goal, the first of three freshman goals on the night, beating Chowan's Marissa Ghani to put the Monarchs ahead, 2-0.
 
Angelica Santos registered an unassisted goal at the 70:28 mark to bring MU's lead to 3-0, and three minutes later, Amanda Hayes took a feed from Emily Rougcher and converted, pushing the Green and Gold to a 4-0 lead.
 
The Monarch's capped the day's scoring at the 76:53 mark as Sara Snotherly recorded the first goal of her career to make it 5-0 in Methodist's favor.
 
MU's goalkeeper, Taylor Ross, was awarded the win after playing all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves. Ghani was handed the loss after seeing the first 45 minutes in goal, allowing one goal and making five saves. Olivia Borer entered in the second half, and made a career-high 11 saves, giving up four goals.
 
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they return to Fayetteville to start home play against St. Mary's (Md.) beginning at 4 pm.
