NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Methodist women's soccer team dropped its last game of the Captains Classic on Sunday afternoon, 1-0, against the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Marlins (2-4) struck early, recording the lone goal of the match at the 8:02 mark when Kaitlyn Clunan took a feed from Madison Atkins at the top of the box and converted, giving VWC a 1-0 advantage.

Methodist (2-2) was outshot 19-13 overall and 7-3 in shots on frame.

Taylor Ross (2-2) was given the loss after making four saves in her 90 minutes in goal, while the Marlins' starting goalkeeper, Alexis Wheeler, left with the win, tallying three saves.

The Monarchs will start conference play on Friday as they travel to Danville, Va. to compete against the host Averett Cougars at 4:00 pm.
